Positive eco-balance
The use of Bag-In-Box Bier also brings environmental benefits.
It is true that more waste occurs with the concept of disposability.
On the other hand, there is a whole host of reasons in favour
of Bag-In-Box:
- Waste is recyclable
The waste produced is completely recyclable. The cardboard
boxes are made of waste paper and the bag, including seal,
are of recyclable polyethylene.
- The logistics process becomes more efficient
- No return empties
- Packaging of low dead weight. For a 30l keg: 24.7% (10
kg of 40.4 kg), for Bag-In-Box only 3.6% (0.95 kg of 26.3
kg)
- Maximum volume usage. Now, 9hl of beer can be transported
per Europallet. (This was 5.4hl before.)
- Streamlined logistics mean fewer HGVs on the road and
lower fuel consumption.
- Resources are saved
- Barrel manufacture is in itself expensive in terms of
energy and resources (metal).
- Fresh water, energy and cleansing agents are used for
barrel cleaning.
Barrel manufacture, cleaning and wastewater disposal are
dispensed with, thus saving resources.
When all these positive effects are taken into account, it quickly
becomes clear that Bag-In-Box makes a positive contribution to
the protection of the environment.
